Shutter Island - Review

"Crazy people, they're the perfect subjects. They talk; nobody listens" – A review of Shutter Island. 

I really love a good psychological thriller and when it comes to directors, Martin Scorsese is hard to beat, so I had high hopes when I first sat down to watch Shutter Island. I'd heard good things, but would it live up to expectations?

Of course it did.

Released in 2010, the film brings together an incredible cast and a story that will have you questioning every single thing you see. The story follows U.S. Marshal Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) as he arrives on Shutter Island, where a hospital for the criminally insane is located, to investigate the mysterious disappearance of a patient. Nothing is quite as it seems though – it's difficult to go much further without giving away huge spoilers, but this is a film full of twists and turns. As soon as you think you've figured out what's going on, something happens to change everything, keeping you on the edge of your seat throughout.

Shutter Island is a film that examines the idea of reality versus illusion, trauma, guilt and the lengths people will go to in order to protect themselves, both physically and mentally. There's a truly unsettling and uneasy feel to each scene, partly due to the psychological element of the plot but also due to the island itself, with eerie corridors and stormy weather adding to the uncertainty.

Leonardo DiCaprio puts in a fantastic performance as Teddy, capturing both his toughness and vulnerability. Mark Ruffalo, playing his partner Chuck, is equally compelling and keeps you guessing about his true motives until the end. Ben Kingsley and Max von Sydow round out the cast, bringing a sense of mystery to their roles. There's genuine chemistry between the actors, which adds to the tension and sense of urgency throughout.

The film looks incredible too. Scorsese uses colour and shadow to create a moody atmosphere, with the island's bleak landscapes and claustrophobic interiors setting the tone. The cinematography is crisp, making even the quiet moments feel loaded with meaning and tension. The sound design and score are haunting, adding to the feeling of dread and confusion. Every thunderclap and eerie melody heightens the suspense, making you feel as trapped as Teddy.

Overall, Shutter Island is a gripping, well-acted thriller that keeps you on your toes. It's clever, unsettling, and stylish - perfect for anyone who enjoys films that mess with your head. I really loved this film, and I'm sure you will, too.
