"Son, can you play me a memory? " – A review of Billy Joel.
Billy Joel is, without a doubt, one of the most influential singer-songwriters in the history of music. Renowned for his storytelling and incredible piano skills, Joel's career has lasted for more than five decades, leaving a remarkable mark on the music industry.
Born in 1949 in The Bronx, New York City, Joel released his first album, "Cold Spring Harbour" in 1971, but it was 1973 that saw his breakthrough success when he released the album "Piano Man", featuring the iconic title track. I love that song; its narrative driven and paints an incredible picture of life inside a busy bar, and it's based on Billy Joel's real experiences as a lounge pianist in LA. It's bittersweet and melodic, and truly beautiful. It's autobiographical, but it's also full of messaging around longing, nostalgia, and the healing power of music – and who can't relate to that?
In 1977, "The Stranger" was released, which is widely considered Billy Joel's masterpiece and was the album that catapulted him into international fame. The album features some of his most popular songs, such as "Just the Way You Are", "Scenes from an Italian Restaurant", and "Only the Good Die Young". It's a blend of pop, rock, and jazz, and the album has themes of relationships, nostalgia and urban life – this is a genuinely incredible album, remaining a staple of classic rock.
1983 brought "An Innocent Man", a nostalgic nod to the music of his youth, before "River of Dreams", Joel's last pop studio album, was released in 1993. Since then, Billy Joel has continued to tour and perform, especially at Madison Square Garden, where he holds a record-breaking residency.
Billy Joel has won several awards over the years. He has won an incredible six Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year in 1980 and Song of the Year in 1979. He has also received several American Music Awards and Billboard accolades, and he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1999.
Billy Joel is a truly beloved figure in music. His legacy is defined by the timeless nature of his songs, his numerous, incredible achievements, and a resilience that continues to inspire artists and fans the world over to this day. If you've never listened before, perhaps it's time you went to listen to a song from the piano man.
