"We'll always be connected" – A review of Death Stranding 2: On the Beach.
I absolutely adored the first Death Stranding game. The graphics were gorgeous, the music was beautiful and the themes of human connection and community really resonated with me. I couldn't wait to see if Death Stranding 2: On the Beach would live up to the first game.
Released in June 2025 by Kojima Productions, the game picks up with Sam Porter Bridges, whose mission has evolved from being a delivery driver to being a key figure in the fight to restore fractured societies. You're thrown into a new crisis as you attempt to reconnect isolated settlements whilst still dealing with the consequences of the past, all whilst meeting new allies and threats along the way. This is a game full of hope, humanity and sacrifice, but it also deals with themes of isolation and survival.
The game does a great job at building on the unique mechanics of the original. There are lots of refinements; whilst you're still focussed on planning your routes and managing cargo, there are now expanded tools, dynamic weather systems and much more intricate terrain to navigate. Combat has been overhauled also, with there now being more tactics and weapons at your disposal, and there's also more meaningful interactions with other characters, which just adds so much depth to the plot. Something I really love though is the introduction of cooperative elements, allowing you to share missions and objectives with others, which fits so well with the themes of connection and community. Overall, the gameplay has built upon and improved on the first game, creating the perfect blend of challenge and reward.
The music is again gorgeous, playing a key role in setting the emotional tone of the game. The score is evocative and atmospheric, full of haunting melodies and the sounds of the world around you, creating the perfect amount of tension and drama at key moments throughout. The game looks great too – characters, landscapes and weather all look stunning and realistic, making Death Stranding 2 feel immersive and alive. This is a game that honours the first but implements key changes and improvements, making this an absolutely stunning sequel.
I really don't have a bad thing to say about Death Stranding 2. It expanded on the gorgeous original game but introduced enough new themes and aspects to keep it fresh and engaging. It's thought-provoking and moving, and the plot stays with you long after you've completed it. If you were a fan of the first game, I promise that you'll have an incredible time with this one.
