“Won’t the real Slim Shady please stand up” – A review of Eminem.

Appearing on the music scene in the late 90s, Eminem, born Marshall Mathers, is one of the most influential and controversial figures in modern music. His raw lyrics, incredible delivery and candid exploration of both personal and societal issues have really set him apart from the other big names in the industry.

Dark humour and raw emotion is always likely to be found in an Eminem album. Complex rhyme schemes, intricate wordplay, vulnerability and wit come together to create personal and cultural commentaries which have earned him critical acclaim and a worldwide loyal fanbase.

His major-label debut, The Slim Shady LP, introduced the world to his alter ego, Slim Shady. It was an incredible first album, including hits such as “My Name Is”, and foreshadowed the success that Eminem would receive. His next album, The Marshall Mathers LP, was released in 2000 and really cemented his success; songs like Stan and The Real Slim Shady becoming instantly recognisable. Back in July 2024, Eminem dropped his latest studio album, The Death of Slim Shady (Coup de Grace), which featured conceptual storytelling, meaning it’s meant to be listened to in order. The album, which was his twelfth, explored and symbolically killed off Shady, and whilst it got mixed reviews, it did pretty well in the charts and I really enjoyed it.

I really enjoy Eminem. He’s not afraid (get it) to tackle taboo subjects, isn’t shy about causing controversy and uses so much provocative language that hearing the amounts of bleeps added to his songs on daytime radio used to make me laugh out loud. He’s shared his struggles with addiction and relationships through his music with unflinching raw honesty, and that makes his music so relatable.

Eminem is a real benchmark within the hip hop genre. His influence isn’t just about record sales and awards; he’s constantly pushing boundaries with his lyrics, and his work has helped the genre reach a wider global audience. His technical abilities are remarkable, and his storytelling is always compelling.

Eminem isn’t just a rapper. He’s a complex artist whose work has left an undeniable mark on the music industry and the world as a whole. Whether you love him for his incredible lyrical skill, compelling songwriting or his candour, Eminem’s legacy is that of being one of the greatest rappers the world has ever seen, and that’s not changing any time soon.
