"May it be" – A review of Enya.
If you've read my reviews before, it will come as no surprise to you that I discovered Enya through The Lord of the Rings. The ethereal, beautiful "May It Be" quickly became one of my favourite film songs of all time, and I was of course compelled to discover the rest of her music.
Enya was born Eithne Pádraigín Ní Bhraonáin in County Donegal, Ireland. Singer, songwriter and musician, she is celebrated for her gorgeous ethereal soundscapes and haunting melodies. Over the decades, she has captivated audiences across the world with her incredible unique blend of Celtic, classical, and new-age influences, making her one of the most successful Irish artists of all time.
Enya's solo career began in 1982 when she collaborated with producer Nicky Ryan and lyricist Roma Ryan, before releasing her debut solo album, "Enya" (which was reissued as "The Celts") in 1987. A year later, the album "Watermark" arrived with the iconic singe "Orinoco Flow", a song all fans of Enya (myself included) rave about, and in 1991 she released "Shepherd Moons", topping the chart and winning her a Grammy. Since then, she has released several successful albums, including "A Day Without Rain" and the critically acclaimed "Dark Sky Island".
Selling over 80 million albums worldwide, Enya is one of the best-selling music artists of all time. Her sound is distinctive, full of layered vocals, and her music is truly timeless; it's cinematic and is the perfect soundtrack to quiet moments of personal reflection and meditation.
Not only has Enya received four Grammy Awards, but she also won the World Music Award for Best-Selling Irish Artist, an Academy Award and Golden Globe for "May It Be", and even an Ivor Novello Award for International Achievement.
You can't ignore the influence she's had on modern music. Her signature style and commitment to artistic integrity have inspired countless artists, and for me personally, her music has provided comfort and calm when life has felt anything but comforting and calming. She has this incredible ability to transport a listener to an otherworldly realm, and that's truly special. Whether you're an old fan or yet to discover her work, I'm sure you'll find that her legacy as Ireland's celestial songstress is well deserved.
