What to watch at Fringe! A review of Flight.

Whilst at Edinburgh Fringe, I wanted to pack in as much as possible. I wanted comedy, drag, theatre – and something a bit different. This is where "Flight" came in – an immersive audio experience which takes place inside a pitch-black shipping container.

Before the lights go down, you're treated to a remarkable set. It resembles a full-scale plane cabin, including seatbelts and even overhead compartments, and this is where I began to get nervous – I am a nervous flyer. As your headset goes on and the lights go out, the tension rises and you begin to ask yourself if you've made a mistake, but alas, it is too late; the flight is about to take off.

This is a truly unsettling experience from Darkfield. It explores Schrödinger's cat and the Many-Worlds interpretation of quantum mechanics, taking you on a journey like no other through two realities which both offer very different endings. Sure, there are worlds out there where this plane will land safely – but is that the journey you're on?

With a few basic effects and creepily close whispers to contend with in the darkness, this is a genuinely unsettling experience. The writing could do with some polishing, sure, and the whole experience only lasts for about twenty minutes so it is slightly on the pricey side for what you get, but I can't say I didn't enjoy it. It was creepy, tense and made several (not me, of course…) audience members literally scream at points.

If you're looking for something creepy and genuinely different to fit in between shows, "Flight" may well be for you. You can experience it for yourself until the 31st of August at Assembly George Square.
