“Are you not entertained?” – A review of Gladiator.

Directed by Ridley Scott and released in the year 2000, Gladiator is a historic epic which has truly left its mark on modern cinema. With an incredible cast which includes Russel Crowe and Joaquin Phoenix, the film follows general-turned-gladiator (Crowe) as themes such as revenge, loyalty and power are explored against the backdrop of ancient Rome.

The plot follows Maximus, a Roman general who had commanded respect, who was forced into slavery and battle as a gladiator after being betrayed by the treacherous Commodus (Phoenix). Fuelled by his desire for revenge for his family and the betrayal of his emperor, Maximus rises through the ranks of the arena and becomes an inspiration for both his fellow slaves and the population of Rome. This isn’t just a film about bloody battle though; his story is one of hope, resilience, and heartbreak.

You cannot ignore the powerful performances throughout the film. Crowe’s Maximus is stoic yet vulnerable, his screen presence being remarkable and earning him an Academy Award for Best Actor. Phoenix’s Commodus is intense, complex and completely chilling, making him an interesting and genuinely unsettling villain. Further depth and gravitas come from the supporting cast, who includes the wonderful Richard Harris as Marcus, and I cannot name a single actor in this film who didn’t deliver a stellar performance.

Naturally, Ridley Scott’s direction is fantastic. The attention to detail, from the grand Colosseum to the dusty barracks, make you feel like you’re stepping into history. The battle scenes are brutal, choreographed with a realism which immerses the viewer in the chaos of ancient warfare. The cinematography, by John Mathieson, really captures the vastness of Rome and the intimacy of Maximus’s personal life and struggles, and Hans Zimmer delivers an emotional score which elevates the stakes throughout.

This isn’t just a film of spectacle though. The themes explored include honour, justice and loyalty, all set in a morally ambiguous world which is rife with betrayal and corruption. This is a film that truly revitalised a genre and has inspired countless historical epics in the years since.

Gladiator is a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film which captivates audiences to this day. Incredible performances, intelligent storytelling, a gorgeous score and thematic depth all come together to create nothing short of a classic. If you like action, drama or history, you’ll love this timeless tale of courage and redemption.
