“Don’t be a drag, just be a queen” – A review of Lady Gaga.
Some performers are simply just iconic and Lady Gaga falls into that category for me. Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, Gaga is one of the most influential figures in pop music since her incredible breakthrough in the late 2000s and I absolutely adore her - but why is she so popular?
In 2008, Gaga released her debut album, The Fame. This album didn’t just do well; it absolutely catapulted her into stardom with chart topping hits like Just Dance and Poker Face. This was only the beginning for Gaga though – subsequent albums, such as the iconic Born This Way and incredible Chromatica showcased her versatility and many talents, as electronic, dance and rock elements came together to create distinctive, catchy and downright brilliant albums.
There are so many career highlights it’s difficult to know where to start. 13 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and several MTV Video Music Awards, alongside an Academy Award for her role in “A Star Is Born”, showcases Gaga’s amazing ability to reinvent herself both visually and musically. This has of course helped to keep her firmly at the forefront of the music industry for over a decade, but it also proves how talented she really is.
Something I truly love about Lady Gaga is her fearlessness. Her provocative fashion choices - such as the infamous meat dress at the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards - and bold artistic statements have always raised eyebrows and shocked crowds. She’s faced criticism for pushing boundaries in both music videos and live performances, but these moments have done nothing but fuel her reputation as a fearless innovator. She has never been shy about making her feelings known surrounding LGBTQ+ rights and other social causes, and this has sometimes attracted backlash, but it has also solidified her status as an icon for many – myself included. Born This Way is still one of my favourite songs of all time, and one I blast every time I need a little reminder of just how okay it is to be myself.
Lady Gaga is an icon and I absolutely adore her. Singer, musician, actor and general star, Lady Gaga has had a huge impact on the worlds of fashion, music and popular culture. Her bravery and artistry will, I am certain, continue to influence people the world over for decades to come, and I can’t wait to see what she does next.
