"Like I'd let you get away. You'll be sliced to ribbons before you ever see that child!" – A review of Resident Evil 8: Village.
Oh, how I loved Resident Evil 7: Biohazard. It was a true return to form; actual horror, real atmosphere, jump scares, great voice acting. Would 8, officially titled Resident Evil 8: Village, live up to its predecessor or would I be disappointed?
How pleased I am to say I loved this game.
Resident Evil 8: Village, released in 2021, masterfully combines survival horror with a creepy atmosphere and genuinely gripping storytelling. Picking up after the events of 7, (which is probably my favourite of the franchise) you follow Ethan Winters as he journeys into a mysterious village in Europe in search of his missing daughter. Full of suspense, intrigue and tension, the game throws you into a world fill of creepy, gothic castles, hidden secrets and sinister characters. The story is honestly fantastic, completely engaging, and kept me guessing throughout.
I absolutely love the locations in this game. The central village is full of dilapidated houses and winding streets, as well as a creepy church, but the stand out for me is the imposing castle, opulent, gothic, and ruled over by Lady Dimitrescu, one of my favourite antagonists of the franchise. Each location is immersive, full of secrets and puzzles, and an absolute joy to explore. The game really does a great job in creating an immersive atmosphere, thanks to its stunning visuals and meticulous environmental design.
There are new features in Village, such as weapon upgrades and a merchant system reminiscent of earlier titles, which provides extra depth and strategic options, yet it still stays true to its roots. The balance between horror, action, and exploration feels so carefully crafted, making the experience both accessible and rewarding.
I loved this game. The blend of action and horror is spot on, the music is great and adds so much tension and atmosphere, the visuals are brilliant and this is a game that just feels like Resident Evil. If you're newer to the franchise, working your way through for the first time, or you're a long-standing fan, I'd really recommend giving Village a go.
