What to watch at Fringe! A review of Reuben Kaye: Hard to Swallow.

Reuben Kaye is an absolute master of his craft. Comedian and cabaret artist, his cutting quips and cheeky one liners are well known for being absolutely hilarious and completely outrageous – and he's back at Edinburgh Fringe with his show, "Hard to Swallow", which is just as spectacular as you'd expect it to be.

Reuben Kaye is known for his provocative humour, social commentary and outstanding voice, and he delivers all of this and more in "Hard to Swallow". This is a gloriously camp, sharp show full of music and stand up as Reuben touches on everything from Andrew Tate being arrested in a blouse to the decreasing birthrates across the world. Even when dealing with incredibly dark subjects (truly, no theme is too far) the show never feels dark or heavy; rather, the serious themes are worked into his songs, which he delivers with an unmatched confidence and perfect pitch every single time.

It's all eyes on Reuben as he performs, whether he's on stage or wandering up to the front row. In fact, his audience interactions are a real highlight; his ability to hold a crowd and playfully bounce off of his audience is truly unmatched, and his creativity and charisma shines through every single interaction.

As you can imagine, this is a show that truly sparkles. Red lights, glitter, and even an early costume change makes this an amazingly theatrical and breathtaking experience. The band are incredibly talented, the atmosphere is electric and Reuban Kaye looks absolutely phenomenal (as always).

This was my first time seeing Reuben live, but I can confirm, after having the absolute pleasure of meeting him at his meet and greet afterwards, that he's a truly warm and friendly person. As if taking the time to speak with us wasn't enough, he also recommended other, smaller shows to us too – truly embodying the spirit of Fringe.

If you're looking for a camp, outrageous, hilarious musical experience at Edinburgh Fringe, this show is for you. You can see Reuban Kaye at Palais du Variété at Assembly George Square Gardens at 8 pm until the 29th of August.
