"I'll be your dream, I'll be your wish, I'll be your fantasy" – A review of Savage Garden.
Savage Garden were an Australian pop duo formed in 1994, made up of Darren Hayes (vocalist) and Daniel Jones (instrumentalist). Renowned for their emotive lyrics and polished production, Savage Garden quickly became one of the defining pop acts of the late 1990s, even if they weren't around for long.
Savage Garden was formed in 1994 in Brisbane, Australia, before releasing their debut single "I want you" in 1996, which was a hit. It was in 1997, when they released their self-titled debut album, that they achieved international success, and included hits such as "Truly Madly Deeply", and in 1999 they released their second album, "Affirmation", which only further established their global presence. The world was at their feet, yet it could not last; a rift between the two members led to them officially announcing the band splitting up in 2001, with the two band members going on to work on their own separate projects.
Savage Garden's impact on pop music cannot be ignored despite them being so short lived, and it was recognised with several awards. The duo won a total of 10 ARIA Awards (Australian Recording Industry Association) in 1997, including Album of the Year, Single of the Year, and Best Group. Internationally, they received a Billboard Music Award in 1998 for Adult Contemporary Single of the Year ("Truly Madly Deeply"), as well as several APRA Awards and World Music Awards during their career.
Though their time together was relatively brief, Savage Garden left a lasting legacy with their heartfelt songwriting and memorable melodies. Their music continues to resonate with fans around the world, ensuring their place in the annals of pop history. They may not be my favourite artists of all time, but I can't ignore the impact they had and the legacy they have left.
