What to watch at Fringe! A review of Sofie Hagen: I Think Some of This Is My Fault.

Known for their podcast, "Sofieland", their stand-up comedy (including winning an award in 2015) and for their left wing takes, I knew I was going to love "I Think Some of This Is My Fault" – and I was absolutely right.

Laugh out loud humour meets a refreshing self-awareness in this solid hour from Sofie Hagen; having moved back to her hometown to live with her mother after living in London, this is an honest, hilarious and completely relatable show all about the pitfalls of living as a social justice warrior (SJW), living with parents and of course a nice amount of hilarious social commentary.

Sofie is unapologetically left wing, even once considering themselves to be an activist – but is sending out a Feminist tweet activism? Is it activism to call out a charity campaign which linked cancer with obesity – and on that, what is it like to be publicly cancelled? Is it possible to ever be "left wing enough" or will there always be someone unhappy with your efforts? This show explores all of this and more, and Sofie delivers each story and example with a brilliant tongue in cheek edge, self-awareness and hilarious ability to say the most out of pocket things and somehow still make them make sense.

One of my favourite parts of the show revolves around a Danish politician who I had never even heard of, yet by the end of the show I was a big fan of. Sofie is a remarkable storyteller and doesn't struggle to get the audience on board; their ability to have a relatable yet in some ways obscure (for a UK audience, at least) overarching narrative to follow and laugh along with is absolutely phenomenal.

I find it so impressive when comedians are able to take current, important issues and make them funny – but Sofie offers a masterclass in how to do it well. If you're even vaguely left wing, you'll find this show relatable – I too feel like I'm making a difference and raising awareness when I repost an article or send a tweet – and whilst Sofie doesn't offer an answer to the question of how to be the perfect leftie activist, they do offer a properly reflective and absolutely hilarious solid hour on the subject.

This is a brilliant show from the Danish comedian, and one I would absolutely recommend. You can watch Sofie Hagen's "I Think Some of This is My Fault" at Monkey Barrel Comedy at 3.20pm until the 30th of August.
