"I'll be back" - a review of The Terminator.
Released in 1984 and directed by James Cameron, The Terminator is one of the most iconic science fiction films ever created. Starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, the film follows the story of a cyborg assassin sent from a dystopian future to change the course of history. Full of action and suspense, The Terminator has a firm place in cinematic history, but how does it hold up decades after its release?
The film centers on Sarah Connor, a normal woman living in LA. However, her life is altered forever when a cyborg assassin from the year 2029 is sent back to 1984 by an AI known as Skynet to kill her before she can give birth to her future son, John Connor, who would become the future leader of the human resistance. A soldier named Kyle Reese is also sent back in time to protect Sarah, and what follows is a tense chase through the city as the threat of a dystopian future looms.
The performances in The Terminator are nothing short of incredible. Arnold Schwarzenegger is perfect in his role, blending an imposing physical presence with a chilling stoicism, making him a genuinely unsettling villain. Linda Hamilton is a brilliant Sarah Connor, and it's a joy to watch her transform from an ordinary woman to a determined, strong survivor. Michael Biehn plays Kyle Reese with grit and urgency, making him a compelling protagonist to root for. Together, this cast brings intensity and authenticity to the film, making it an exciting and compelling watch.
The cinematography is great too. Stark lighting and urban, shadowy landscapes help with the sense of tension and unease, and the neon-lit streets filled with concrete and steel leans into the 80s feel but gives the film a timeless aesthetic which means it still looks great today.
There are few criticisms to be found with The Terminator. Supporting characters aren't overly developed and the special effects have of course aged. These are such minor criticisms though; The Terminator is a brilliant film, and I absolutely love it. I love the themes it explores, such as fate, technological advances (which feels particularly relevant now with the use of AI on the rise), and survival, and even though The Terminator is now over four decades old, this is still a must watch classic that any fan of science fiction will love.
