"You come at the king; you best not miss" – A review of The Wire.

The Wire, from HBO, aired from June 2002 to March 2008, unfolding over five seasons that examined the underlying structures of urban life in Baltimore, Maryland. Created by David Simon, a former police reporter, the series had an ambitious narrative, running for an impressive 60 episodes. Each season delved into a different corner of the city's institutions: the police force, the drug trade, the docks, the political system, the education sector and the media.

The Wire had a brilliant cast, many of whom weren't very well known before their breakout roles in the series. Dominic West delivered a complex portrayal as Detective Jimmy McNulty, a self-destructive yet highly dedicated character. Idris Elba's performance as Stringer Bell was incredible, offering a charismatic take on the drug kingpin archetype. Wendell Pierce as Detective Bunk Moreland brought wit and gravitas, while Michael K. Williams gave a legendary performance as Omar Little, a notorious stick-up artist whose moral code was difficult to categorise.

I love the style of The Wire. The show laid out its narrative like a slow burn novel, the cinematography was understated, the dialogue was full of slang and local idioms, and together all of this brought realism and authenticity to the narrative. The tone of the show was dark; there were never really simple heroes or villains but shades of grey, as the show explored the failures and pitfalls of every institution it examined. Sometimes uncomfortable viewing, but always gripping, nonetheless.

The show has been deservedly celebrated for its storytelling, technical achievements and unflinching realism. The characters are as complex as the urgent issues the show explores, and it's a truly thought-provoking watch.

The Wire really is a must watch for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of the American city and the forces that shape it. Gripping, gritty and incredibly entertaining, if you've never seen it, I cannot recommend it enough.
