What to watch at Fringe! A review of Wench.
I couldn't go all the way to Fringe without seeing something a little bit different, and I am so pleased that "Wench" was one of the wonderful shows I got to see. From Felix Le Freak, known for winning Drag Idol UK, "Wench" is a one woman show all about not fitting in, not bending to become someone you're not, and being delightfully unacceptable.
The show follows three separate wenches – Martha Tallow, accused of witchcraft in 1644, Marta Fettwachs in 1929 Berlin who is a true advocate for indulgence despite the obvious looming shadow, and Marti Wax, who is living her dream of being a popstar but has a vicious media to contend with. These three women are far from perfect and that's the point; they are completely, unapologetically themselves, and we watch on as they pay the price for being who they are, flaws and all.
The fact that this is a one-woman show is truly incredible. The costumes are outstanding and fabulous, the storytelling via exposition and songs is exceptional and the stories are intriguing and fast paced. Felix Le Freak is fabulous, fierce and absolutely iconic as she delivers her songs and monologues, answering to accusations and making one or two of her own.
The humour is spot on as well. Slightly off beat and incredibly camp, there are plenty of innuendos, gags and one-liners to keep you entertained throughout. The simple staging is effective, allowing Felix to remain the centre of attention throughout but also using a screen to give the audience a sense of place and time.
This is a glamourous, scandalous, mischievous show all about women who refuse to bend to societal expectations, and in the year 2026 that is exactly the kind of messaging I want from Edinburgh Fringe. Full of sharp wit, offbeat humour and an unapologetically queer vibe, this is a wonderfully intimate, hilarious and memorable experience which I would highly recommend.
You can watch "Wench" at 300 Underbelly, George Square – Bluebell at 10:45pm until the 30th of August.
